Art and "the body"
Recently in class we read a chapter about the concept of "the body" from Robertson and McDaniel's Themes of Contemporary Art. This topic interests me in relation to identity, which I mentioned in an earlier blog post. In my artwork, I have been exploring how women are portrayed in our society, through the media, through literature, etc. In our society, there is a pervading beauty ideal that can be unhealthy for women. In addition, girls are taught at a young age that they need to sexualize themselves in order to be noticed. In my artwork, I want to find a way to contradict this system, and I usually do so by drawing the female figure. My work references caricature and uses these elements, but I am incorporating the human figure into my work nonetheless.
