Ellen Gallagher

I recently found images of Ellen Gallagher's work in After the Revolution: Women Who Transformed Contemporary Art, by Heartney, Posner, Princenthal, and Scott (which is definitely worth reading!)

Ellen Gallagher, "Wiglette" (detail) from "DeLuxe," 2004/2005. Photogravure and plasticine sheet: 13 x 10 inches.
I was interested in the fact that she included images directly from the media, and manipulated them to send messages about race, class, and gender. In this example, Gallagher has whited out the eyes on images of African-American women, and covered their hair with various yellow materials, simulating blonde locks.
Her works demonstrate the demands placed on these women to conform to beauty ideals.
