Nancy Spero

Nancy Spero's work was largely influenced by the women's movement of the late 60s and 70s. Her artworks draw from mythological, historical, and contemporary texts and figures, and always depict the female as the protagonist, even in a wide range of situations.

I am interested in the way that her work seems to present a narrative that is continuous even through different periods of history. She combines these different sources skillfully. She also combines image and text in a way that is not contrived; the text and words are always well-suited to each other, and fit into the visual composition of the piece as well.
